Insidious Real Goal of Reporting on Supposed Obama "Flip-Flop" on Iraq
All the chatter over the last 24 hours on cable news has been about Obama's supposed "flip-flopping" on the Iraq War. Besides the fact that these "allegations" are utterly baseless, the right-wing-inspired blathering has distracted us from a very substantive discussion of policy which Obama offered in Fargo.
It seems that ONLY the local Fargo media picked up on the substance here. Here's their headline:
OBAMA On IranThe United States needs to send signals that it is willing to engage in direct diplomacy with Iran the same way it did with North Korea, including possibly offering incentives for Iran.
"That kind of tough diplomacy is a supplement to our military power, and it is also the way we will prevent our young men and women in uniform from being sent into situations where they might not have to go," he said.
On VETERANS
Obama pledged to build a "21st-century" Department of Veterans Affairs that will reduce red tape, expand housing vouchers for homeless vets, increase funding and establish more centers for veterans in rural areas.
"Recovering troops should go to the front of the line, and they shouldn't have to fight to get there," he said.
On HEALTH CARE
Obama plugged his plan for universal health care, saying subsidies would be available for people who can't afford it. He advocated expanding insurance coverage to mental health conditions and putting more money into prevention programs, such as smoking cessation.
"Right now, we don't have a health-care system. We have a disease-care system," he said.
On EDUCATION
The nation's education system needs higher standards, especially in math and science, but the quality of schools shouldn't be measured by a single high-stakes standardized test as with No Child Left Behind, Obama said. He also proposed a $4,000 tuition credit for every student who wants to go to college and is willing to engage in community service.
Distracting us from a substantive discussion of real issues which are affecting America and the world is certainly a goal of McCain's new campaign operative Steve Schmidt. It appears that on day one of his new job, the mainstream media lemmings have fallen for Schmidt's garbage.
